It’s been exactly forever since people have been wishing for a ultra-portable Mac. Ever since the firstMac portable (if you can call it that) people have been asking for something smaller, thinner and lighter.
According to a story at AppleInsider Apple is preparing a “grand introduction” of an ultra-portable Mac at Macworld Expo on 15 January 2008. Features of the new notebook include:
  • Approximately 50 percent lighter and thinner than current 15-inch MBP
  • No optical drive
  • 13-inch LED-backlit display
  • NAND flash drive or hybrid drive (TBD)
  • Significant improvement in battery performance
If the price is right, the nanoBook stands to be a home run for Apple. The big question is whether it will be a pro or a consumer machine. Mobile pros that need more horsepower than the MacBook currently offers are chomping at the bit for a smaller pro machine, but everyone is hoping that the price will be lower.
Based on the premium that LED-backlit displays get over traditional cold cathode fluorescent backlights (CCFLs) and the premium that SSDs and/or NAND flash memory command over fixed hard drives it looks like nanoBook will most likely be a nanoBook Pro.
