Sony Xperia ion for AT&T completed our battery test, here go the results

We are all well aware by now that the combination of Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 chipset and LTE network connectivity do not bode well for the battery life of a smartphone. Throw in the Sony Xperia ion’s HD screen in the mix, and its easy to guess that the 1900mAh non-removable battery has a lot to deal with.
As always we took a look at the 3G talk time performance of the Sony Xperia ion first for AT&T. With a time of 5 hours and 52 minutes, the handset did a rather poor showing, which came close to the bottom of our charts.

Talk time

  • Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX20:24
  • Samsung Galaxy Pocket5:54
  • Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T (LTE)5:53
  • Sony Xperia ion LTE5:52
  • Sony Xperia P5:33
  • Nokia 808 PureView5:16
  • Pantech Burst4:46
Things got significantly better in the web browsing section of our battery test. Here the Sony Xperia ion achieved the rather impressive 5 hours and 56 minutes before its battery called it a day – a score which put the device close to the best performers we’ve encountered so far.
On this occasion, we must remind you that the test was conducted over a Wi-Fi network. Expect a significant dip in endurance, when you browse the web over LTE.

Web browsing

  • Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX7:23
  • BlackBerry Curve 93806:40
  • Samsung i937 Focus S6:15
  • Sony Xperia ion LTE5:56
  • Samsung Rugby Smart I8475:53
  • Pantech Burst5:51
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus3:01
Sony Xperia ion’s video playback time of 6 hours and 3 minutes is hardly the greatest we’ve seen. Still, given the screen at your disposal, it is more than acceptable.

Video playback

  • Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX14:17
  • Samsung Galaxy Pocket6:06
  • Samsung Captivate Glide6:04
  • Sony Xperia ion LTE6:03
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus6:02
  • HTC Vivid6:00
  • Nokia Lumia 7103:27
The overall endurance rating of the Sony Xperia ion for AT&T came out to be 31 hours. This means that the handset will last a tad over a full day if you use it for an hour each of telephony, web browsing, and video playback every day.
We were pleasantly surprised by the web browsing and video results of the handset – they were the two areas we were most skeptic about. The telephony and standby time however, prevented the handset from doing great in our test.
